How to Get Started

Once you’ve taken a good look at your credit report, and you’ve seen that there are some accounts on your report that you did not open, or some debts that you did not incur, you will need to get the complete name and address of the companies that are charging you, and write a letter requesting that the item be removed from your report. The letter does not have to be very long, but you should make sure that you are as descriptive as possible, and that you cover all the necessary points. You should make it plain that you have requested a reinvestigation of the debt by the credit bureau of your choice, and that you have proof that the information on your credit report is not correct. But before you send your letter off, there are a few more things you should include.

Sending the Correct Credit Dispute Letter

Make sure that your name and address are clear and easy to read, and appear at least twice in the letter or envelope. In some cases, names that are close in spelling may get mixed up in the computer systems of debt collection agencies, and you want to ensure that this mistake doesn’t happen again. Also, include a copy of your credit report in with your letter; it may be best to highlight the section in your report that describes the debt that you are being charged with—this way, it will be clear and easy to read for creditors. You should include all the necessary information about the account in the letter as well, even though this will most likely be in your credit report. The account number for the debt you owe, the city and state that the account is in, and the opening and closing dates on the account should be included in your letter. This will make it easier for creditors to search the account, and to fix the problem as soon as possible. You should also state in the letter that you require a written response within 30 days from the creditor, so that you can determine whether or not you need to take the matter further. But, in most cases, the creditor dispute letter will get you the results you need and allow you to restore your credit in a timely manner. It’s not too difficult once you get started so get going right now!
